Your door s width should be 2 to 3 inches wider than the door opening and 1 inch higher than the dimensions of your opening.

For door openings with casing molding.
Remember barn doors need to slide at least as far as the opening in one direction or the other.
If the door will be replacing a bathroom door or another room that requires privacy then you might want to consider a greater overlap.
In this example the opening width is 32 4.
You re better off just putting the slats together and seeing how wide they are when you add each full slat to the set so you don t have to end up ripping one to size.

Measure across for the width and from the top of the casing molding to the floor for height.
Since the door sits off the wall in order to slide it must be wider that the opening to fully hide the opening.
Add 1 to 2 per door for overlap depending on privacy needs.

Since there are two doors the door width has to be at least half of the opening and even more so if you want them to overlap.
To have privacy the door usually overlaps the opening by an inch so that a 2 6 opening will require a 2 8 door.
