Before you learn how to change door locks measure the space where you ll install the replacement. Remove a kwikset knob lock set with no screws and no detent the secret catch. Interior door knobs however will often have the screws hidden from view for a cleaner look on the door. Measure the diameter of the holes currently cut out of your door so you can select a new door lock that fits those dimensions.

Most door knobs attach to the door with long retaining screws that are visible. When you first look at this style of door knob it appears as if it cannot be removed from. Open the door so that you can view the edge of the door. Locate the two screws that secure the latch mechanism in place.

Set all pieces aside and keep all components together to make reinstallation easier. Try twisting or pulling the rose away from the door to expose the screws. A set screw is typically installed along the base of the lock on the interior side of the door. Remove the two screws with your screwdriver and slide the latch out of the edge of the door.

These screws are behind the decorative cover plate between the inner door knob and the door. Expose hidden set screws. Unfortunately with a plethora of doorknobs available on the market you may not even know what kind you have. This plate is known as a rose and can almost always be removed by hand.

Take care to measure carefully as matching the size can be especially problematic in older homes.
