The sill is not the horizontal trim board that extends from the wall.
How to measure a bedroom window.
Measure the width of your window.
In many cases window frame width is not level from the top to the bottom.
As a result you should take three measurements one at the top one in the middle and one at the bottom to get a more accurate number.
That s because the manufacturer adds half an inch to each of the size dimensions so the window can be installed with ease.
The actual measurements of the window are usually 1 2 inch less than the whole number identifier it is labeled as.
Use the tape measure to measure from the sill to the top of the window opening.
When measuring for width position the tape measure against the window.
Then to measure length measure downward from the inside top frame to where you want the valance to fall on the window.
Make three vertical measurements on the left side of the window from the sill to the header then.
Take the total number width plus the number you added to each side and divide that number by how many drapery panels you want in the window.
Use the smallest of these three height measurements to order the window.
For example a window marked to fit a 44 x 44 opening will actually measure around 43 x 43.
The sill is where the sash rests when closed.
One at the left side one at the center and one at the right side of the window.
Measure from the high point of the sill of your window the surface closest to the inside of the window to the top of the window opening.
Measure the width of the existing window in three places at the bottom at the middle and at the top.
Add 12 inches to each side 24 inches total.
